Goodbye to London’s Astoria

Published by dletus at 12:14 pm under Metal (General) Edit This

One of London’s premier music venues, the Astoria, is set to close down tomorrow. The Astoria and neighbouring club the Astoria 2 (formerly the Mean Fiddler and LA2) will be demolished to make way for a new east-west cross London rail link called Crossrail.

London Astoria photo from wikipedia user Secretlondon. The Astoria has hosted some of the biggest names in heavy metal over the years. In just the last few years I’ve seen the likes of Anthrax, Megadeth, Ace Frehley, Venom, and Onslaught at the Astoria and/or Astoria 2.

There are talks of a replacement venue possibly being built somewhere in London, but I’ll believe that when I see it.

Crossrail is sure to be just like every other project in London over the past decade. It will go over budget by tens of billions of pounds, take twice as long as scheduled, and not work properly when it does finally open.

Meanwhile, London just lost two more live music venues.
